In the Blogs
After an amazing premiere at SxSW, bloggers all over the web have been writing about the film. Here is a list of some of our favorites:
• Film School Rejects - "Deep down, everyone yearns to be a part of something bigger than themselves, something that is special for many people across the world. For a group of revolutionary artists, most of whom came together in the early to mid-1990’s, doing what they loved and saying “screw the rest” led them to lead a street-culture revolution that has effected modern American culture like few have before it. Aside from being a big part of the movement, Aaron Rose also chose to make a very engaging and colorful documentary, chronicling the rise of these “beautiful losers” as well as the bumps along the way."
• Pop Matters - (3rd review on page) "After watching the film Beautiful Losers, I felt like I had fallen in love." + "Eye-catching shots of all the work combined together with poetic edits make the film itself feel like an installation where it doesn’t matter who did the art, just that it exists for us to witness. A catchy score by Money Mark and a killer soundtrack (including a Cat Power track that tickles the film’s climactic montage like fingers on a guitar) add aural aesthetics to the visual masterworks."
• Film School Rejects - "At first glance, it appears to be a doc painted with a broad stroke, giving it a jumpy, unfocused feeling — that is, until it evolves right before our eyes into something special, something memorable and something that catches the eye and the hearts of everyone who is lucky enough to be in the theater."
• Spout - "What I didn’t expect from Beautiful Losers was how much fun it would be to watch a documentary of the most unpretentious, unmoody and successful artists of my generation."
•
•PBS - a refreshing contrast to what others have been saying.
• La Story - (good quotes from the 1st q&a although I was misquoted about the stickers on lamposts bit) "Beautiful Losers is beautifully inspiring, as it was surely meant to be. Audience members left the aisles with huge smiles on their faces and you could tell by the gleam in their eyes, they were looking for something to make."
Money Mark's show:
• IFC - "One of the highlights of Mark's set was a song he did for the film Beautiful Losers that ended up not making the cut. Mark prefaced it by saying, "This song didn't make the soundtrack. It was very controversial. It's called, 'When Beautiful Losers Get Mad.'" Upon finishing his set, Mark looked out to the audience and said, "My echo went out, my shit failed, but I still kicked it old-school for y'all.""
